The First Day

This is maybe not the best start.  We have visitors and this is all I could do.  It’s a Fisher Price toy from my son’s Little People school bus set.  I sure hope a lot of kid toys don’t end up in my sketchbook, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.  There are bound to be many moments of desperation over the next year.

Charcoal. Sketchbook.

I give myself 2 out of 10 Van Goghs for this sketch.  Wait, before you say I’m being too hard on myself, I took off points for the toy’s pedestal being slightly off center.  It’s all I can think about when I look at it.  And I took off more points for choosing the wrong medium.  The charcoal is way too thick for the details attempted.  And I took off one more Van Gogh for the subject matter…on my first day, I should have done better.

Also, in celebration of my first day, I requested that my dad contribute a sketch.  After all, my dad first exposed me to art through his own painting.  His contribution was this quick charcoal of his feet.  Thanks, Dad!

Well, I’m hoping for some better work this coming week, but I’m not discouraged by my mediocre start.   Surely, I will be inspired in Marrakech where we are headed this weekend.
