Tis the Season for Painting

It has been a busy season of painting this winter as I’ve started to show my work for the first time in a public setting.  I displayed my work at two Christmas markets and at a diplomatic spouse coffee where I did a live painting demonstration.

Here I am doing my best to be both diplomatic and artistic.  Success, no?

One of my favorite works this round is “Frogner in Snow,” inspired by friend’s facebook photograph.  The colors were so perfectly muted and beautiful that I wanted to tackle the challenge right away.  At 29 centimeters square, it’s the perfect size for a watercolor and my style of working.

Loving this size so much, I attempted two more pieces also at 29 centimeters.  The first is a building called Påfulgen (“peacock”) which I recently learned is an art and cultural center that is in disrepair and will soon be town down.”  The second is a landscape in Geilo where we visited in the Spring.

And lastly, another social media-inspired painting, this time from a local photographer, Charlotte Wiig.  She takes beautiful photos around Oslo and this one was striking to me.  Charlotte graciously allowed me to paint her photograph.  Check out her Instagram feed here.  Scroll down a bit and you’ll see the photograph that inspired this painting.

And lastly, switching scale and mediums for a bit, I painted miniature canvas Christmas ornaments in oil this year.  They represent two of my favorite Norwegianisms, the paper Christmas star and the classic Marius knitting pattern.

I’ve posted a few of these paintings for sale on the Shop page.  Hope you enjoy!

  1. A lot of nice work here. Glad you have found the time to draw and paint Norway. It is a place made for watercolors.
